Share and Tell: Cooking with a church group

It was a delight to read this letter from Rita. It came on a day where I needed an uplifting story and a reminder of  why I do what I do and work so hard on Kids Cooking Activities. Thank you so much Rita for sharing your experience.

i just want to tell you what an inspiration you have been to me with my group of 8 girls who I've recently begun teaching to cook.

I started God's Girls over 3 years ago with a group of 9-12 year old girls teaching them to sew.  But I saw you online one day and thought how great it would also be to teach my girls to cook since the schools don't have Home Ec for learning sewing and cooking anymore.  (this is the inspiration I had for www.kids-sewing-projects.com as well)

This past Sunday was only our 2nd baking session but it went extremely well.
For our first session each girl made "bread in a bag" and her own homemade butter (some added honey to theirs).


For this 2nd session, we had 5 girls who were able to attend, and I taught them to make "Mini Snickers Cheesecakes with Homemade Chocolate Ganache and Caramel Sauce".
Quite an ambitious recipe! Not difficult, just a lot of steps to it.

 
Thankfully I had a couple of adult helpers! I set up 3 work stations with 3 mixers, bowls, and 3 of all utensils. They came to the big table where the ingredients were to do their measuring. and my girls exceeded all my expectations! They made 36 mini cheesecakes, and were SO proud of their accomplishments (so was I)!

They are at a great age when they are so eager to learn new things and haven't yet become self-critical or self-doubting where they think they can't do something. one of the grandma's who helped me was scared to death to see her young granddaughters chopping away on the mini snickers bars with a huge knife! :-) As I shared pictures with the girls' families, I realized all that they had learned in that one session: they learned to follow a recipe, use the mixer, scrape down the sides of the bowl, measure the ingredients accurately (and neatly!), use some specific cheesecake pans and "tamper" tools for the Oreo crust, use a HUGE knife to cut up the snickers bars into tiny pieces (not one injury either!) and make chocolate ganache and caramel sauce on the gas stove.

The only thing I didn't let them do was handle the pans in the oven. They learned SO MUCH in just one session without even realizing it, beyond having fun and making something delicious! They also helped wash and dry dishes! That's a very important part of cooking/baking, although not nearly as fun!

My goal is to have the girls prepare an entire meal for their parents and siblings by the end of the summer (that's about 50 people!). Nearly all of the recipes we'll use for the meal will come from the cookbook my church just had printed. In order to afford to buy the ingredients for the dinner, I'm going to have them bake a variety of goodies for a bake sale at our church in July after the services. (although we're not officially sponsored by my church, they've been so kind to allow us to use the library for our sewing and now the kitchen for our baking. the church is very. supportive of my group and my goals to first, grow young girls into godly young ladies with good morals and a love for Jesus, but also to teach them sewing and baking skills that they will use their entire lives.)

So I just wanted to tell you how useful your website has been to me with my girls. you give me so many ideas, but most of all the encouragement I need to step out and undertake something so huge, teaching girls with different levels of cooking experience and at different ages/attention spans to work together as a team and make something from start to finish in just 3 hours. Your website and newsletters encourage me and give me the confidence that I CAN do this!

Kid-friendly Recipes

Nutritious Kid-friendly Recipes

One of the things that parents spend a lot of time thinking about is making and preparing nourishing recipes for their little ones. While it can sometimes be difficult to always prepare nourishing recipes, especially when you have little time or are in a hurry after work, there are many nutritious recipes that you can create very quickly, here are some of them.

Applesauce

Almost all kids enjoy applesauce and applesauce is surprisingly painless to prepare and very delicious. All you need are 2 red apples, two teaspoons of sugar (brown sugar is fine), a couple of tablespoons of lemon and some cinnamon. Making applesauce is simple, just put your two red apples in a food processor, tossing out the core first. Process the apples and once they become chopped up into small pieces put them in a bowl; add your sugar, lemon juice and finally a few pinches of cinnamon. Voila, you have fresh and all natural apple sauce.

Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits

Here is a recipe that almost everyone will love. Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits are extremely painless to prepare and you can concoct numerous types of parfaits just by selecting different types of fruits. For this recipe you can begin with about 8 ounces of yogurt, some chopped up strawberries and some fresh granola. Just mix the yogurt and strawberries together and add the granola to the top. You can quickly improvise with this recipe, mixing in any type of fruits you like. In addition to adding granola, you can choose to add your favorite cereal, nuts, a few drops of chocolate or a gummy bear or two. This recipe takes only a second to make and will put a smile on all your little ones’ faces.

Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are tasty, fun to eat, and simple to prepare. They are also extremely healthy. You just need potatoes, some fresh milk, and a little butter. One of the ways to spruce up your mashed potatoes for little ones is to add a little food coloring, especially for the holidays. For instance, many people during St. Patrick’s Day make green mashed potatoes. For Halloween, you can add orange food coloring, etc. While you can simply spruce up mashed potatoes, this is one food that your kids will like because it tastes awesome. It is important to note that while you can buy mashed potato flakes, it is always better to use fresh potatoes.


Cinnamon French Toast

Are you seeking a healthy breakfast option? French toast is it! You can prepare French Toast very simply, just take white bread, or almost any variety of bread and place it into a combination of fresh milk and eggs that have been slightly beaten. Now cook it on a griddle with either a drop of butter or cooking spray and voila, you have French Toast. Rather than using high sugar syrups or fatty butter, choose instead to sprinkle yummy cinnamon. Many parents use fresh fruits as well, such as strawberries and raspberries to complete their creation.

Tips for Making Healthy Juice with Plenty of Vitamins and Nutrition

Making healthy juices isn’t hard when you are making homemade juice from scratch. The vitamin and mineral components of the juice are dependent on which produce you use, and how much of it you use. You can increase your chances of making healthy, nutrition packed juice by giving it some thought prior to getting started.

To ensure that you have healthy juices with plenty of vitamins and minerals choose from these three different categories of ingredients.

Choose a Base:

* Celery
* Cucumber
* Carrot

Choose a Flavor:

* Berry
* Apple
* Citrus

Add a Green:

* Kale
* Spinach
* Lettuce

Being sure not to overload on any one flavor will make the most nutritious and flavorful juices. Learn about the vitamins and minerals in the produce you like to eat, as well as which vitamins and minerals can help treat illnesses you want to treat or avoid. Finally the most nutritious juice is the one you’ll actually drink, so make sure it tastes good.

What to do on Mother's Day Ideas?

Mother’s Day is coming up soon (psst it’s Sunday, May 10th this year) and you don’t want it to sneak up on you so get a grown up to help and make a plan to take care of mom for a change. Take a look at the easy ideas below, choose one and make this Mother’s Day one she will not soon forget.

Breakfast In Bed

If your mom is like most, then I bet she is usually up early every morning to get everyone ready for the day. Why not let her sleep in this year and then serve her breakfast in bed? To keep things simple, plan your surprise the night before. You could serve mom her favorite muffins, fresh fruit and beverage. Make sure to include a nice flower and maybe even a poem written by you especially for the occasion.

A Day To Herself 

Your mom loves you very much. That’s why she is always ready to help you out anytime you need anything. Imagine the look on your mom’s face when you present her with a coupon for a full day to do whatever SHE would like to do. All you need to do is get a pretty piece of paper and create your own gift certificate entitling your mother to one day of peace and quiet. Decorate it with markers, crayons or stickers.

Anything you think your mom would like. When she wakes up Mother’s Day morning, present her your gift certificate filled with love. If you want to really impress her, ask a grown up to buy a book you know she’s been wanting to read. You could even present the book and coupon with a pretty cup or mug so she can enjoy her favorite beverage while she’s reading quietly. As for the “quiet” part – ask the grown up helping you to make sure you are kept busy as well as supervised so that mom doesn’t have to worry about anything the whole day long.

Family Day

If you think your mom would prefer spending time with the family instead of a quiet day alone, plan something fun your mom enjoys doing. She spends a lot of time making sure you are entertained and often will not do something she enjoys because she know you would enjoy doing something else better.

Why not repay that kindness by planning a day of fun family activities that you might not ordinarily do? Need some suggestions of what mom might like to do?




  • If your mom likes art, you could take her to the local museum. Many museums even have a place where you can enjoy lunch together. If mom likes the outdoors, pack a picnic lunch and head to the park or trails.






  • Does mom like music? Take her to a concert with music from “when she was a girl.” Buy tickets for the whole family and go enjoy.





  • Is mom a movie lover? Going to the movies to see a movie she wants to see is a great idea, but can be expensive. Why not rent a few of her favorite movies, pop some popcorn and spend the day watching at home?
